Google Cloud and Ericsson together in the name of Edge cloud and 5G solutions

Partnership merges Google Cloud platform with Ericsson’s 5G portfolio to support communications service providers delivering capabilities at the edge for businesses and home customers

It is a partnership between Google Cloud and Ericsson. The aim is to jointly develop 5G and edge cloud solutions, to support communication service providers (CSPs) in their digital transformation, paving the way for new use cases for businesses and consumers.

Globally, edge industrials – including CSPs, retailers, manufacturers, transportation, healthcare, media and entertainment companies – face pressure to build more digitized businesses and deliver new digital experiences to their customers. To help companies cope with this change, Google Cloud and Ericsson are working together to develop new solutions at Ericsson’s D-15 Labs in Silicon Valley, an innovation center where advanced solutions and technologies are developed and tested on a live, multilayer 5G platform. Ericsson and Google Cloud have already completed onboarding Ericsson’s 5G network functions to Anthos, to enable edge and on-premise telco use cases for CSPs and enterprises. As part of this collaboration, Google Cloud and Ericsson are also experimenting with TIM on the deployment of enterprise edge applications on TIM’s live network.

The project, which will automate the functions of TIM’s 5G core network and cloud-based applications, will make use of TIM’s Telco Cloud infrastructure, Google Cloud solutions, and Ericsson technologies for the 5G core network and orchestrator. These joint offerings will help enterprises in the automotive, transportation, manufacturing, and other industries improve efficiency and reduce latency by bringing computational and storage capabilities closer to the physical locations of businesses. “Organizationshave an amazing opportunity to digitally transform their businesses through 5G and cloud capabilities such as artificial intelligence and machine learning at the edge, “emphasizes Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud.

“Weare working with Ericsson to support building the foundation for communications service providers and enterprises to take advantage of cloud technology and cloud-native services, from the core of the telecommunications network to the edge and corporate headquarters.” “5G is a formidable platform for innovation. Combined with the performance of the cloud edge, 5G has the potential to accelerate the digital transformation of virtually any sector of industry or society, ” highlights Niklas Heuveldop, President and Head of Ericsson for North America. “Weare committed, together with our customers, to leveraging the combined set of our capabilities to solve real-world business challenges for the benefit of consumers, businesses and society at large.”
